Fetch: why short lakes stay flat and long lakes get angry

Ask two sailors about "a 15-knot day" and one describes champagne conditions while the other describes a beating. The difference is almost always fetch — the distance of open water the wind has crossed before reaching you.

How waves build

Wind transfers energy to the water surface, and that energy needs distance and time to organize into waves. In the first half-mile of fetch you get chop: short, confused, spiky. Over several miles the waves lengthen, organize, and stack into swells with real height. This is why the far end of a long lake — the downwind end — always has the biggest water, and why a wind shift can turn your calm anchorage into surf within twenty minutes.

Wave height scales roughly with wind speed squared and with the square root of fetch, so doubling wind does far more damage than doubling lake length. A 25-knot wind over four miles of fetch routinely builds chest-high steep chop that stops most dinghies; the same wind over half a mile is merely brisk.

Using fetch on the water

Practical sailors use fetch constantly. Sailing upwind of the fleet keeps you in flatter water; the lee shore downwind of the long axis is where boats get broken. Planning a day sail on a long narrow lake? Beat down the short axis where it is flat, and reach home downwind on the long axis with the waves behind you — the reverse order makes for a miserable, wet final hour.

At the ramp, fetch decides whether you can load the boat: onshore wind over the lake's long axis means surf at the trailer lane even on an otherwise ordinary day.

Fetch in the score (and its limits)

Our sailing score includes a wave penalty implicitly through wind speed — but we cannot yet model true wave height per lake, because that requires lake shape geometry beyond our gauge points. Until then, the direction arrows on every hourly forecast are your fetch tool: line them up with the lake's long axis, and treat long-axis days above 15 knots with respect on big water.
