Solunar theory: do moon phases really drive fish bites?

Solunar tables — the "major and minor feeding periods" printed in fishing almanacs — claim that the moon's position drives fish activity. Anglers have sworn by them for a century. Scientists are more skeptical. Here is what is actually going on, and how we use solunar data honestly.

The theory

Solunar theory (from "sol" + "lunar") holds that fish and game feed most actively when the moon is directly overhead (upper transit) or directly underfoot (lower transit) — the "major" periods — with secondary "minor" activity around moonrise and moonset. The claimed mechanism is gravitational, tied to the same tidal forces the moon exerts on oceans. Inland lakes have no measurable tides, so proponents lean on subtler claims: light levels, and behavioral entrainment to lunar rhythm.

What the evidence shows

Controlled studies are mixed. There is solid evidence that some fish track lunar cycles for spawning (full/new moon triggers are well documented in sea bass and other marine species), and moonlight changes nighttime feeding behavior. But controlled tests of the transit-timing hypothesis specifically have repeatedly failed to find strong effects — the honest summary is: solunar periods do not dominate fish behavior, but they do not hurt as one factor among many, and they correlate with things that matter more (like being on the water at dawn).

The strongest practical signal remains temperature, light, and solunar-adjacent timing: dawn and dusk genuinely are peak feeding windows, and solunar majors that land near them are the almanac's best days. That is no accident — the moon transits drift about 50 minutes later each day, so its schedule regularly intersects prime light.

How we use it

On every lake's Fishing tab we compute solunar majors and minors for the lake's own timezone — approximated from mean lunar transit times, so treat them as ±15-minute guides — and fold them into the fish-activity windows as a modest bonus, never as the main driver. Water temperature (estimated from recent air temperatures, since EA real-time gauges do not report it) is weighted heavily, followed by dawn/dusk timing, wind ripple, and storm risk. If you follow solunar tables religiously, our windows will feel familiar; if you think it is astrology, you can ignore the moon column and still get useful windows.
